Daniele Daffonchio

Daniele Daffonchio is Professor in the Biological and Environmental Sciences and Engineering Division (BESE) and PI of the Extreme System Microbiology Lab at the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. His research focuses on the study of diversity and functions carried out by microbiomes associated with complex ecosystems in conventional and extreme aquatic and terrestrial habitats. His research spans from basic aspects of microbial ecology through the application of synthetic ecology approaches to applied aspects for the environmental protection and sustainability of agriculture, including the characterization of extremophile microorganisms, particularly those associated with plants and animals, along the water stress continuity from the Arabian desert to the depth of the brine pools in the Red Sea.
