Connie Tulloch
Connie Tulloch is a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Water Sciences. Her current research forms part of a UKRI-NERC funded project focused on developing and deploying innovative sensors to identify and track sewage-derived organic pollution. Holding a degree in Biochemistry, Connie has a research background in environmental microbiology, particularly the interactions between microbial communities and plastic materials as they move through wastewater treatment systems and into marine environments. Her work is supported by a broad range of laboratory, analytical and technical research skills.
FeaturesTracking the invisible: monitoring microbial processes in freshwater ecosystems using fluorescence sensing
Rivers are dynamic ecosystems driven by microbial processes that regulate carbon and nutrient cycling, organic matter decomposition, and oxygen consumption. Despite their central role in river health, microbial processes remain mostly invisible in routine water quality monitoring programmes, which continue to focus primarily on physicochemical parameters.
