As the first microbiome-focused research institution in the Caribbean and a member of the U.S. Microbiome Centers of Excellence Consortium, PR-CMS is transforming the island into a launchpad for collaborative, high-impact research across the Americas and beyond.

The Center arrives at a critical time. Microbiome science is rapidly expanding, revealing the essential roles microbial communities play in human health, agriculture, environmental sustainability, and disease. Yet, the infrastructure and access to this emerging field remain uneven across the globe. Regions like Latin America and the Caribbean, despite their unique ecosystems and public health challenges, are often underrepresented in global microbiome discourse.

Local and international needs

The COBRE PR-CMS seeks to serve mostly local needs but also offer a resource for international needs. The Center is designed not only to foster excellence in microbiome science but also to make that excellence accessible—especially to researchers and institutions at the border of the microbiology mainstream.

One of PR-CMS’s most visionary strategies is its integration with Applied Microbiology International (AMI) and its ambassadorial network. Through these global ties and open seminar series, the Center will become a hub for training, mentorship, and collaborative discovery. It will lay the groundwork for joint projects, bilingual symposia, researcher and student exchanges, and cross-border research residencies that will link scientists across Puerto Rico and the US and offer new opportunities for collaborations across the globe.

From high-throughput sequencing and advanced bioinformatics to expert-led workshops and community engagement programs, PR-CMS will be a blend of technical sophistication and inclusive mission. International collaborators—whether early-career trainees or established scientists—can bring research questions to Puerto Rico receive new training skills and build their networks to support long-term collaboration.

Real-world impact

PR-CMS is innovative because it anchors global science in a local context. Projects are co-developed with Puerto Rican scientists who are now pursuing research in microbiomes, ensuring that research is technically advanced and locally relevant. By aligning its efforts with public health priorities and environmental challenges, the Center will redefine scientific excellence through its real-world impact.

The opportunity to host the COBRE retreat aligned with a new regional microbiome annual meeting which can be a joint AMI event, pilot global grant-writing incubators, and serve as a testbed for microbiome studies in tropical and subtropical systems, places the PR-CMS in a unique position to elevate voices and data from underrepresented biomes. In doing so, the Center enhances Puerto Rico’s standing in the international scientific community. It gives local researchers the tools and platforms to lead, while also inviting the world to learn from the island’s ecological and clinical insights. Early-stage projects on oral cancer, neurological disease, and behavioral health already show how locally grounded science can address globally shared problems.

The COBRE-supported PR-CMS is a powerful example of how strategic investment in research infrastructure—like that of the NIH—can unlock scientific excellence in emerging regions. With advanced resources, strong collaborations, and a forward-looking mission, this initiative is set to significantly expand Puerto Rico’s capacity to lead in microbiology and microbiome sciences on a national and international scale. This is science without borders, designed for a world that can no longer afford silos. In placing Puerto Rico on the microbiome map, PR-CMS is not just creating a center—it’s launching a movement.

The University of Puerto Rico Medical Sciences Campus (UPR-MSC) has been awarded an $11.3 million NIH-COBRE grant (National Institute General and Medical Sciences) to establish the Puerto Rico Center for Microbiome Sciences (PR-CMS)—the first of its kind in the region. This milestone is spearheaded by Dr. Filipa Godoy-Vitorino, Chair of the Department of Microbiology and a recognized global leader in microbiome research, who also serves as the Applied Microbiology International’s Global Ambassador for the Americas.
