Applied Microbiology International has just launched a recruitment drive for editors for two of its most prestigious scientiific journals.
We’re looking for editors with expertise and a wide network in some of our specific research themes for the flagship journals Journal of Applied Microbiology and Letters in Applied Microbiology.
It comes after a period of transformation which has seen both journals undergo significant changes, along with the society itself.
The then Society for Applied Microbiology underwent a strategic review and full rebrand in 2022 to become Applied Microbiology International.
The two journals were also transformed, with new Editors-in-Chief and a new look and feel in 2022, followed by a move to our new non-profit publishing partner, Oxford University Press, in 2023, where we are now published alongside fellow societies such as FEMS and ISME.
Working with our new Editors-in-Chief, AMI has developed a new vision for each journal and restructured and reformed our editorial boards to enable us to meet our new goals.
Letters in Applied Microbiology
LAM has been transformed under the leadership of Dr Marcela Hernández to be the journal that develops the next generation of academic editors in applied microbiology.
In 2023 we launched two unique training programmes for junior editors and reviewers to work on the editorial board under a mentor for two years of one-to-one training and ‘on the job’ experience.
Our first cohort will complete their training in the autumn, and we have already reviewed the programmes to see how we can improve for the next group. We will be advertising this summer for the January 2026 intake and we are excited to offer this opportunity to an even more diverse group of young scientists.
Do you have the passion for mentoring young scientists and significant editorial expertise that you want to pass on to the next generation? We are currently recruiting a Senior Editor and Mentor for LAM. Please visit our website for details and to apply.
The closing date is 4th July.
Journal of Applied Microbiology
JAM has improved dramatically under the leadership of Prof. Andrew McBain and aims to be the first choice for authors working in applied microbiology globally.
Since 2022 we have streamlined the editorial board and processes and recruited a dedicated reviewing tier. This has resulted in dramatic decreases in publishing times: Submission to first decision has reduced from 53 to 20 days and, with the great work of our new publisher, the time from acceptance to the final paper being published in an issue is down from 117 to 14 days.
This all makes for an excellent author experience, as demonstrated by our recent author survey where 96% of respondents said they would be ‘likely’ or ‘highly likely’ to submit again to JAM.
Next phase
Now that we have the journal running smoothly and Andrew has established clear acceptance criteria, which we are confident has improved the quality of articles we are publishing, we are moving on to the next phase of our strategy.
We have identified four core Research Themes to focus on growing content in the journal: Microbial Biotechnology, Microbiology in Health and Disease, Plant and Environmental Microbiology and Systems Microbiology and we are recruiting editorial leads for the themes.
Manuel Simões, our current Deputy Editor, will head up the microbial biotechnology theme and we are currently recruiting lead editors for the other three themes.
Do you have expertise and a wide network in one of our Research Themes? Do you want to help us grow our flagship journal? Please visit our website for details of the vacancies and to apply.
The closing date is 24th July.
