Your learned society needs you! Applied Microbiology International (AMI) is inviting researchers, students and professionals across the STEM community to take part in a new video series exploring the experiences of neurodivergent people working in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

The initiative, led by the Diversity and Inclusion team at Applied Microbiology International, aims to raise awareness of neurodiversity in STEM, spark conversations and highlight the diverse ways in which people think, work and contribute to scientific discovery.
The series will feature short videos of between two and five minutes, created in collaboration with participants. Contributors will have the opportunity to share their experiences, perspectives and insights while helping to build a richer understanding of neurodiversity across the scientific community.
Wide range of experiences
Organisers are keen to hear from people at all career stages and from across STEM disciplines. Participants will be able to shape the content of their videos and choose the topics they wish to discuss.
Potential themes include:
- What neurodiversity is and how it influences research and scientific work
- Personal career journeys and experiences in STEM
- Reasonable adjustments in the workplace and how they can benefit everyone, including neurotypical colleagues
- Conversations between neurodivergent and neurotypical scientists exploring different approaches to research and problem-solving
- “Day in the life” insights into working in STEM
- Navigating conferences, networking events and other demands of academic and professional life
- The skills, perspectives and innovations that may be lost when neurodivergent colleagues leave the sector
- Other topics contributors feel are important to discuss
Participants will work closely with the D&I team throughout the production process, from planning and filming through to editing. Contributors can also choose to include photographs, video clips and other materials to help tell their stories, and will be consulted at every stage.
Platform for authentic voices
The organisers hope the series will provide a platform for authentic voices, increase understanding of neurodiversity in STEM and encourage more inclusive workplaces and research environments.
“Every neurodivergent person’s experience is different,” said Policy and Diversity Officer Irene Lavergne. “By sharing a wide range of stories and perspectives, we hope to raise awareness, challenge misconceptions and start meaningful conversations about how STEM can become more inclusive for everyone.”
Anyone interested in learning more or participating in the series is encouraged to contact the Diversity and Inclusion team at diversity@appliedmicrobiology.org.
Whether you are an early-career researcher, an established scientist, a student or someone working behind the scenes in STEM, your experience could help broaden understanding and inspire others across the scientific community.
