When infectious diseases spread, public health officials must make critical decisions about vaccinations, treatments, and disease control. Mathematical models are becoming an essential tool for understanding how diseases move through populations and identifying the most effective ways to respond.

Professor Romain Glèlè Kakaï, Professor of Biostatistics at the Université d’Abomey-Calavi, develops mathematical models to study diseases such as cholera and malaria. His research helps scientists evaluate how interventions, including vaccination, mosquito control, and seasonal malaria prevention, can reduce disease transmission.
His models are also used to estimate the impact of malaria vaccines and support planning by organizations such as the World Health Organization and Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance.
Looking ahead, Professor Kakaï believes combining traditional mathematical models with artificial intelligence will improve the accuracy of epidemic forecasting and help public health leaders respond more quickly to future outbreaks.
