Why are infections linked to medical implants so difficult to diagnose and treat — and what can microbiology reveal that clinical symptoms alone cannot? A free upcoming webinar and coffee hour aims to find out.

The ‘Unraveling Periprosthetic Joint Infection’ webinar on March 25 explores one of the most challenging complications in modern orthopedic medicine, sitting at the intersection of microbiology, surgery, and patient care.
In this talk, part of the Microbes and Social Equity 2026 Speaker Series, Dr. Robin Patel will explore the microbiological mechanisms that underpin these infections, with a focus on biofilm formation, low-grade and chronic infection, and diagnostic uncertainty.
Drawing on clinical and laboratory insights, she will examine why standard diagnostic approaches often fail to detect causative organisms and how advanced microbiological techniques can improve detection and treatment strategies.
The talk will also consider the clinical consequences of delayed or missed diagnoses, highlighting the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration between clinicians, microbiologists, and laboratory scientists. This session offers insight into how microbiology shapes real-world medical decision-making in high-stakes clinical settings.
After the talk, the conversation continues with an informal social hour. Join us as we chat with the speaker, MSE members, and attendees about research, teaching, our pets, and more!
